Review of Dope

About the word "dope"

Usually, the lead in a coming out of age film would finally erase his sin and return the right way. But apparently, this rule doesn' fit in Malcolm, the lead of Dope. Dope means drugs or something cool. In this case, the director successfully filled in both meanings.

Anout Techniques

Firstly, I have to say that the tempo of the film is excellent. I was worrying about Malcolm from beginning to the end. Also, the film has a perfect soundtrack with all these 90s hip-hop, built up a phenomenon full of wild and the feeling of dope. When it comes to cinematography, the camera is constantly shaking, with hip-hop music and electronic music, make the film tense while remaining funny.

About Equity

In a pleasing atmosphere, the film tells an unfortunate story, that a genius, a geek, have to compromise to the street rules to get into Harvard. I think the film explained why equity matters in American. As an Asian, we always feel that American schools have higher demands on Asian students than others. So I used to get confused when I heard about that. But after watching the film and learning from other sources, I come to realize why equity is essential to American.

About Teenager

By the way, as a young man just passed his teenager, I am shocked by a lot of nudity of teenagers (I supposed) in the film. I could never see such things in a Chinese movie. I guess the two countries have very different culture when it comes to sex, especially sex of teenagers. And Malcolm started to get into trouble by going to the party. Even he knows he should not mess with Dom. And I think it is the most dope thing that Malcolm did in the film, which I mean it negatively. He could stay out of the Inglewood culture and still be a geek if he did not come to the party and get his hands dirty. But as a student with both parents who have a position in college, I don't think I am the one to judge what Malcolm did, because he has grown up in a much more challenging environment than what I grow up into, and I didn't get into Harvard.

About Technology

And another issue that interests me is that they use bitcoin to wash drug money, I don't think this is an ethic way to do so. Yes, we need a way to demonstrate how smart Malcolm and his friends are, but I think this can lead to potential imitation crime.
